Block Breaker Beginner’s Guide
Welcome to Block Breaker! Whether you grew up playing Arkanoid in the arcade or you’re picking up a paddle game for the first time, this guide will help you crush blocks, climb levels, and rack up massive scores.
Getting Started
Click the Play Now button on the homepage to launch the game. Your paddle appears at the bottom of the screen and the ball sits on top, ready to launch. Click anywhere or press Space to send the ball flying upward toward the bricks.
Essential Controls
- Mouse — Move your mouse left and right to slide the paddle. This is the most precise control method.
- Arrow Keys — Press ← and → to move the paddle. Great for keyboard players.
- Touch — On mobile devices, drag your finger across the screen to control the paddle.
Understanding the Bricks
Not all bricks are equal. Here’s what you’ll encounter:
- Single-hit bricks — These shatter on the first contact. They glow in bright neon colors and make up the majority of early levels.
- Multi-hit bricks — Tougher bricks that require 2–3 hits. Watch their color change after each impact to track remaining durability.
- Strategic layouts — Higher levels arrange bricks in patterns that force you to plan your angles carefully.
Paddle Positioning Tips
The angle of the bounce depends on where the ball hits your paddle:
- Center hits produce a straight vertical bounce — predictable and safe.
- Edge hits create sharp angles — perfect for reaching bricks tucked into corners.
- Stay centered at the start of each level. This gives you maximum reaction time for both left and right returns.
Catching Power-Ups
When you break certain bricks, power-ups fall toward your paddle:
- Expand Paddle (cyan) — Widens your paddle, making it easier to return the ball. Always grab this one.
- Multi-Ball (magenta) — Splits your ball into three. Focus on keeping at least one ball alive rather than chasing all of them.
- Laser (gold) — Lets you shoot blocks directly from your paddle. Tap or click to fire while it’s active.
Pro tip: Power-ups fall at a fixed speed. Position your paddle beneath the falling icon before it arrives — don’t chase it at the last second.
Building Your Score
Points come from every block you destroy, with bonuses for:
- Combo chains — Breaking multiple blocks in quick succession multiplies your score.
- Higher levels — Later stages award more points per brick.
- Clean clears — Finishing a level without losing a life feels amazing and keeps your momentum.
Managing Your Lives
You start each game with 3 lives. Lose the ball past your paddle and you lose a life. When all lives are gone, it’s game over. To protect your lives:
- Don’t panic on fast returns — small, smooth paddle adjustments beat large, jerky movements.
- Keep your eyes on the ball’s trajectory, not on the bricks.
- If multiple balls are in play, track the lowest one first.
Your First 10 Levels
Levels 1–10 are your training ground. Use them to:
- Get comfortable with paddle speed and ball physics.
- Practice using edge hits to angle the ball into tricky spots.
- Learn the rhythm of power-up drops.
By level 10 you’ll have the muscle memory to handle whatever the game throws at you. Good luck, and break every last block! 🧱⚡
